there was a bit of debate when the nintendo ds launched and if the signal actually interfered with televisions. one hack a day investigator pretty much confirmed it. so, there might be some cool hacks to tune it in better or something else, like jamming it.
"I read somewhere about DS interference on old TVs. My wife has this cool old Sony Watchman so I decided to see if I could pick up the DS. It did..."

ipod firmware hack part iii
there's an update to ipodwizard which allows you to change the images on your ipod, like the do not dissconnect screen, battery images, etc. in this update you can view the strings and edit character metrics, the next update that will come out soon will allow the editing of the strings, and that's when it gets really interesting.
itablet, the tablet mac
a lot of people have been asking for a tablet version of the mac, and well, if you wait long enough someone will eventually build it. over on macmods they have the story of a photographer who built his own, all in fairly small and impressive case. very cool and useful.
wifi on treo 650 uberhack
okay, maybe i'll consider the treo 650 now. before, it was extremely disappointing that the wifi drivers weren't out when the phone shipped, but now thanks the "shadowmite" here's the hacked up sdio wifi drivers and instructions.
1) Copy the file to a SD card
2) Run the file
3) It will go threw installing some files, followed by a soft reset
4) It will install some more files, and identify itself as T5 Wifi installer
5) It will ask for the Wifi Card…
6) Insert the card and press next, it should finish and reset again.
7) Rock and roll, experiment and figure it out...
nicely done.
fake nintendo ds mods and hacks?
hmm, i'm not too sure about these hacks, but figured by posting it up, we'd all figure out the scoop. apparently with a fairly simple mod you can play gameboy & gameboy color games, and also "double" the range of the wireless, i'm a little skeptical about these, but i might sacrifice on of the ds units to try it out.
make your own dance dance revolution mat
here's a pretty cool diy project. if you have a dreamcast and want to make your own ddr mat (dance dance revolution) here's a step by step that uses an old controller, carboard, toiler paper, cardboard and a bit of solder.
making your own xm commander cable
a couple folks sent this in (thanks!)--if you have an xm direct and want to use your pc to control it (and record with some of the apps that allow that) here's a way to do it without paying $40 to $50 for the cables currently being sold, this one comes in at $15 and it's a pretty simple project. nicely done jcdillin.
more on ipod firmware hacking
here's a follow up...poster "zsk009" on the engadget comments says...
the ipods firmware can be updated without restoring the entire ipod, before running the updater follow these steps:
go on your ipod to ipod_control>device>sysinfo
and open the file in wordpad.
find this line of code:
buildID: 0x03028000 (3.0.2)
visibleBuildID: 0x03028000 (3.0.2)
change a number with a lower number
buildID: 0x03018000 (3.0.1)
visibleBuildID: 0x03018000 (3.0.1)
now the updater will think you have firmware version 3.0.1 and will let you update without restoring the entire thing.
this has been tested with 3g and 4g, the example above is 4g, the 3g uses different numbers but its virtually the some thing, just decrease the number. it should also work with other ipods but i'm not sure
(the ipod_control folder is a hidden folder)
thanks!
enable dell x50 series pocket pc secret software
a couple of you dell totin' pocket pc hackers sent this in--turns out there's a secret contrast app the you can unlock by editing the registry.
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\Contrast' renaming the "redirect" value to "redirect_" (or rename to something else, or remove it completely). soft reset and go to start > settings > system > contrast and adjust the contrast.
paper enigma machine
the enigma machine was invented in 1918 by arthur scherbius in berlin, it was, at the time a great way to encode messages, well, until it got beat. but now you can make one out of paper.
is there anything pdfs can't do?
this machine is compatible with the original 3-rotor german enigma used during world war ii. for simplicity it omits the "ring settings" and plug board, but the primary workings of the machine are captured in this model. great as an educational tool, or just for fun!
n-gage external mmc hot-swappable connector
man, i am disappointed that i didn't think of this when i had the n-gage, most likely because i didn't like the device and tossed it, but now this mod kit ($15) allows you to leave the n-gage on and swap out games really quickly. nicely done guys.
ipod fonts and graphics hacked out of firmware
wow, this is pretty interesting. someone has figured out how to get all the fonts and graphics off the ipod's firmware. while that's a pretty amazing feat, i suspect the next thing will be to change the firmware with new graphics, i'll see what i can figure out!
series 2 tivo hacking
in the effort of getting all the tivo hacks up here, this is one sent in (thanks everyone) is a cook book on upgrading a stock sa2, adding more hard disk space, second drives, or getting command line access and tivoweb running on it. it's not for the advanced hardcore folks, but a good start. if you have other ones, send them in or post'em up!
make an ipod case out of a milk jug
i really dig the idea of making ipod cases out of weird things. tires, socks and well, milk jugs. here's a great how-to, along with pdf template on making an ipod case out of a milk jug.
